New patient acquisition marketing

A new patient is worth more than the first appointment.

Practices judge new patient campaigns on the value of a check up and conclude they do not work. Judged on what a registered patient is worth over five years, the arithmetic looks entirely different.

5 yrsThe horizon to judge value over
—New patients registered
LifetimeNot first appointment value
The short answer

New patient acquisition should be judged on lifetime value rather than the first appointment fee. A registered patient generates recurring examination and hygiene income, accepts treatment over time, and refers others, which is why campaigns that look uneconomic against a check up fee are often profitable. The common mistake is the deep discount or free examination offer, which attracts people shopping on price who do not return. A better approach is a normally priced new patient examination promoted properly, combined with treatment specific campaigns where the case values justify higher acquisition costs.

What makes it different

Why new patient acquisition does not market like everything else.

Lifetime value changes the maths

A patient attending twice a year, having hygiene, and accepting treatment periodically is worth a multiple of the first appointment. Campaigns judged only on the examination fee will always look like failures.

Free examinations attract the wrong patient

A patient acquired on a free offer is frequently a patient who moves to the next free offer. It also sets the expectation that your prices are negotiable before you have met them.

Capacity has to come first

If your diary is full, new patient acquisition makes the practice worse. This is the first question we ask, and occasionally the answer is that you should not be advertising at all.

Treatment campaigns and general acquisition are different jobs

A general new patient campaign fills routine capacity. A treatment campaign targets high value work. Practices frequently run one and expect the results of the other.

Demand, by city

How many people search for this each month.

Indicative monthly search volumes for the main term in twelve UK cities, roughly 2,790 searches a month between them. It tells you whether the demand exists before you spend anything. Your own catchment will differ, which is what the free audit looks at.

Where it works

The channels that suit it.

Not every channel suits every treatment. Running the wrong one is the most common reason a practice concludes that marketing does not work.

Avoidable

Where new patient acquisition campaigns go wrong

The mistakes we see most often, in roughly the order they cost the most.

  • Judging the campaign on the examination fee alone
  • Free or heavily discounted examinations that attract price shoppers
  • Advertising when the diary has no capacity
  • Expecting a general campaign to produce implant cases
  • No system for asking satisfied patients to refer
  • Neglecting the Google Business Profile while paying for ads

Straight answers

Common questions.

What is a new dental patient worth?

Far more than the first appointment. Judged over five years of examinations, hygiene, treatment and referrals, campaigns that look uneconomic against a check up fee are frequently profitable.

Should we offer a free examination?

Usually not. It attracts patients shopping on price who move on to the next offer, and it signals that your prices are negotiable before you have met them.

What is the cheapest source of new dental patients?

Your Google Business Profile and referrals from existing patients. Both are sustainable and both are routinely neglected in favour of paid advertising.

How many new patients should we expect a month?

It depends entirely on your catchment, capacity and spend. Any agency quoting a number before looking at your area is guessing.

Should we advertise if the diary is full?

No. Acquisition when you have no capacity produces disappointed patients and poor reviews. Fix capacity, or market the treatments you do have room for.
