Teeth whitening marketing

Low value alone. Valuable as a doorway.

Whitening rarely justifies a standalone advertising budget. It earns its place as the treatment that brings people through the door, and as the add on that improves every other cosmetic case.

The short answer

Assess whitening campaigns using the practice’s actual fees, delivery costs and capacity. Standalone campaigns are not automatically unviable. Whitening is dentistry: dentists, or appropriately trained hygienists, therapists and clinical dental technicians working to a dentist’s prescription, can provide it within their scope.

What makes it different

Why teeth whitening does not market like everything else.

The economics rarely work alone

A whitening case is worth a fraction of an implant case, but the cost of acquiring a patient is not proportionally lower. Paid campaigns for whitening alone usually lose money once you account for time.

It works as an entry treatment

A whitening patient who has a good experience becomes a check up patient, then sometimes a bonding or aligner patient. Judged on lifetime value rather than the first fee, it looks entirely different.

Your list is the right audience

Whitening offers sent to existing patients cost almost nothing and convert well, particularly seasonally. This is where whitening marketing belongs for most practices.

You have a real safety argument

Whitening is dentistry. Dentists, or appropriately trained hygienists, therapists and clinical dental technicians working to a dentist’s prescription, can provide it within their scope. Registration in another dental role alone does not authorise whitening.

Demand, by city

How many people search for this each month.

Indicative monthly search volumes for the main term in twelve UK cities, roughly 3,530 searches a month between them. It tells you whether the demand exists before you spend anything. Your own catchment will differ, which is what the free audit looks at.

Where it works

The channels that suit it.

Not every channel suits every treatment. Running the wrong one is the most common reason a practice concludes that marketing does not work.

Avoidable

Where teeth whitening campaigns go wrong

The mistakes we see most often, in roughly the order they cost the most.

  • Running standalone paid campaigns and losing money on them
  • Ignoring the existing patient list, where it actually works
  • Missing the seasonal windows entirely
  • Competing on price with mail order and salon whitening
  • Making unfair or unevidenced claims about competitors
  • Treating a whitening patient as a one off rather than a new patient

Straight answers

Common questions.

Is teeth whitening worth advertising?

Rarely as a standalone paid campaign, because the case value is low relative to acquisition cost. It works as an entry treatment, an add on to larger cases and a seasonal offer to your existing list.

Where should whitening marketing be aimed?

At your existing patient list, seasonally, by email and text. That is where the economics work and where conversion is highest.

Can we say salon whitening is illegal?

Explain the permitted professional roles accurately: a dentist, or an appropriately trained hygienist, therapist or clinical dental technician working to a dentist’s prescription. Avoid blanket claims about all consumer products or sellers.

When is whitening demand highest?

Around weddings, summer and the run up to Christmas. Timing a campaign to those windows matters more than the creative does.

Should whitening be included with aligners?

It often works well, because it increases case value and gives a natural finish to the treatment without needing its own advertising budget.

We will look at demand in your catchment, what competitors are doing, and whether your website and enquiry handling could convert it. Written up and yours to keep. If the answer is that it would not work, we will say so.
